João received his medical training at the Federal University in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he also earned a PhD degree, studying mechanisms of Treg function and loss of tolerance to self-antigens in autoimmune diseases. Afterwards he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the Pew charitable trusts and joined the lab of Ron Germain, at the National Institutes of Health, USA, to persue studies on T cell antigen recognition and in vivodynamics of the immune responses. He has been serving the scientific community as a professional editor since 2013, when he joined Cell as the primary editor for immunology and translational medicine.
