John Dark is Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Newcastle University, and had been, until August 2017, a cardiac surgeon at the Freeman Hospital for almost 30 years. He headed the heart and lung transplant programme in Newcastle from 1987-2008 and again from 2015-2017. He was the National Clinical Lead for Governance at NHS Blood and Transplant from 2013 ODT, up to the end of March 2019.
His clinical interests were in transplantation of the heart and lungs, in surgery for the mitral valve and the thoracic aorta. He was a pioneer of the DCD lung transplantation and the clinical application of EVLP.
Research interests revolve around improving the results of organ transplantation, the patho-physiology of brain-stem death and the role of organ perfusion in thoracic transplantation. He is a Theme Lead in the BTRU, and heads a heart perfusion group in Newcastle. He is also a PI for QUOD.
